The SQWUREL is a wonderful descender that has been specifically designed for use in canyons.

The key feature is its unique tail, which allows friction to be quickly and easily adjusted while abseiling. Even fully weighted the rope can be moved in and out of the tail to increase or reduce how much friction the device provides. This is particularly helpful on long drops, where the ability to add friction as you descend is very useful, along with abseils that shift between vertical, overhung, and flatter ledge sections.

This descender is particularly popular among canyoners that weight a little more (like myself), or on trips where you are abseiling with a heavy pack. It works well on 8mm or 9mm double ropes, or single ropes from 8mm to 11mm, although single rope technique is where it really shines.

Manufactured from top-of-the-line T6 hardened 7075 aluminium in an ISO 9001 compliant facility in Utah, the SQWUREL is the result of several years of hard work, more than 60 versions, and extensive input from a large group of very experienced American canyoneers.

Key advantages:

  • add and remove friction easily while on rope
  • get on and off rope without removing the descender from your harness
  • ideal descender for use with single rope technique
  • easy to lock off
  • has a sneaky bottle opener built in to the design
